7 Ways To Optimize Your Mental Clarity

Here we are. Seven more tips to help you optimize your life and your training. The greatest training is done with a clear mind and so is the most powerful living. Read on…

1. Get in shape! The healthier your body is, the vehicle that carries around your mind, the better your entire unit will function. Depending on which state you’re in, exercise can either create more energy within the body so you have more optimal function or burn off nervous energy so you can calm down and concentrate. The healthier you are, the better you feel. The better you feel, the better your mind works.

2. Balance your carbs and protein. Many people tend to get sleepy after they eat either because they’re hyper-insulinic or because they don’t balance their nutrients well and get a large insulin dump into their bloodstream which makes them feel tired. Protein is also necessary for excellent brain function. Limit your carbs to keep your insulin down and stay alert.

3. Eat your veggies/and or supplement your vitamins and minerals. Many times energy and clarity are affected by not having the proper micro nutrients and you need them for general health anyway. “B” vitamins and zinc are two that particularly energize and help with brain function. Be careful with zinc, especially if you take it on an empty stomach as it can make you very gittery.

4. Optimize your environment. Some soft music occasionally helps certain people think, but too many stimuli in an environment in which you need significant concentration is just asking for a problem. That means you can’t blast loud Metal while trying to learn high level bio-chemistry.

5. Optimize your timing. Different people tend to hit their stride creatively or in the realm of productivity at different times of the day. Figure out which one works best for you. Organize your day so you can focus on the tasks that require that clarity at your own optimal times. Also organize the rest of your day so that your before or after optimal mental output activities don’t interfere. For instance, if I take a short workout I tend to concentrate very well afterward, but if I take an extremely long, difficult workout my concentration will be blown for a couple of hours afterward, so choose wisely where you block your activities in your schedule.

6. Optimize your pacing. If you’re on a roll and concentrating extremely well then if it all possible make the most of your immediate time, but when you feel yourself beginning to fade stop and take a break, but a disciplined break that allows you to come back and continue your train of thought. Get up, walk around, get a drink take five minutes of exercise and come back. Probably not great to go more than a couple of hours of steady high-gear mental work without taking a short break. But the refreshing you get will pay off in increased productivity over a longer period of time.

7. Balance your life and control your stress. If all you can think about is your immediate problems and not the task at hand your brain doesn’t tend to perform very well. Organizing your mental and spiritual life to create the greatest harmony also flows over into your mental ability. That’s not to say that you can’t function well under pressure in a deadline, but it does mean that if you just had a three hour argument, kicked the dog, dented the car and threw the lawn mower into the swimming pool, you’re probably not going to be optimally concentrated. Also create balance among the area of your life. As much as I love strength training, even I need to talk and think about other things occasionally. Stare at anything long enough and it’ll put you to sleep. Don’t make your life one sided, make it well rounded.
